JACKSON, Tenn.
- The West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (27-34; 68-63) took another from the Montgomery Biscuits (32-29; 66-65) at Pringles Park Sunday evening, sending the reeling Biscuits to an 8-5 defeat.
The Biscuits, still mathematically involved in the South Division playoff hunt, have lost eight of their last nine ballgames and 11 of their last 14. They trail the division-leading Mississippi Braves by 4 1/2 games.
The Biscuits led for most of the game on the strength of leadoff man Rashad Eldridge's bat. Eldridge led off the game with a home run, his fifth, against starting pitcher Tracy Thorpe. Two innings later, he provided the Biscuits with another lead by clanging a two-run double off the left field wall.
Biscuits starter Heath Rollins lasted five innings, allowing six hits and four walks. He lost two leads, allowing two runs in his final inning. Three of the four runs against him scored with two outs. Marshall Hubbard's two-out single in the fifth gave the Jaxx the 4-3 lead when Rollins left.
Pat Cottrell popped a single into right field in the sixth inning to score Erold Andrus and tie the game, but the Jaxx took the lead for good shortly afterward.
West Tenn sent its entire order to the plate in the seventh inning against relievers Ryan Reid and Roger Deago, scoring four runs. The biggest hit was Mike Wilson's two-run, bases-loaded double, the knockout punch for Reid, who lost the game.
Montgomery scraped one run together in the eighth on back-to-back double by Rhyne Hughes and Gaby Martinez, with Martinez collecting his 90th RBI of the year.
The third game of the series is Monday at 7:05 p.m. with Biscuits righty Jeremy Hellickson opposing West Tenn right hander Gaby Hernandez.
