West Tenn collects 18 hits in series-opening win
|
JACKSON, Tenn.
- The West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (26-34; 67-63) knocked out 18 hits Friday night at Pringles Park in a 10-7, series-opening victory over the Montgomery Biscuits (32-28; 66-64).
After trailing, 7-2, the Biscuits got a five-run burst in the seventh inning. Matt Spring, Johnny Raburn and Rhyne Hughes singled home runs, while sacrifice flies by Rashad Eldridge and Neil Walton plated two more.
The surge got Montgomery starter Jason Cromer off the hook. The lefty had allowed nine hits and five earned runs in 3 1/3 innings of work. West Tenn starter Joe Woerman had allowed only two unearned runs until the five seventh-inning runs hung on him.
The Jaxx, though, got the winner against Colter Bean in the following inning on an 0-and-2, two-run homer by Greg Halman.
The Biscuits have lost seven of their last eight games and 10 of their last 13. They trail the Mississippi Braves by four full games.
Game two of the series is Sunday at 4:05 p.m. with Biscuits righty Heath Rollins on the hill.
