HOOVER
- The Montgomery Biscuits (29-18; 63-54) got the better of the Birmingham Barons (22-25; 62-55) Friday night, notching a 2-1 victory in the second pitchers duel in as many nights at Regions Park.
Jeremy Hellickson picked up his second win as a Biscuit, allowing just one run on eight hits through seven solid innings of work. The lone run came on a Brandon Allen solo shot in the seventh frame.
It could have been much worse for the Biscuits starter, who worked out of multiple jams, including a bases loaded, no outs situation in the third inning. The Barons failed to score after Hellickson induced a 5-2-3 double play and comebacker to the mound to end the threat.
Hellickson recorded four double plays in the ballgame, while striking out six and walking two.
The Biscuits offense struggled to score on Barons starter Aaron Poreda, but mustered just enough to swing Montgomery to their 11th straight road win.
Poreda allowed just two runs on five hits, while striking out a season high ten. The Biscuits were outhit ten to five and struck out a season high 14 times, but came through with a couple of timely extra base knocks.
Of those five hits, four came as pairs. Craig Albernaz followed a Josh Asanovich single with an RBI double to give the Biscuits the early 1-0 lead, followed by back-to-back doubles from Rhyne Hughes and Erold Andrus to make the score 2-0 after four frames.
Biscuits reliever Ryan Reid pitched two scoreless frames to earn his fourth save of the year. The righthander allowed two hits and struck out one.
Montgomery will try and make it a smooth dozen tomorrow, as they look to keep the momentum going behind southpaw starter Jino Gonzalez. Gonzalez opposes the Southern League's ERA leader in Justin Cassel at 7:05 from Regions Park in Hoover.
