MONTGOMERY- Mississippi Braves (1-0) first baseman Kala Ka'aihue blasted a solo homerun in the top of the ninth inning at Riverwalk Stadium Tuesday night to give the Braves a 3-2 lead and eventual victory over the Montgomery Biscuits (0-1) in the second half opener.
Biscuits ace Jake McGee took the mound against fellow number one starter Todd Redmond. McGee pitched four scoreless fames until with two outs in the fifth inning, three consecutive hits, including an RBI triple from JC Holt put the Braves on top 2-0. He was lifted after 5 2/3, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out three and walking two.
Braves ace Todd Redmond was equally as effective as McGee. He lasted six full innings while giving up four hits and striking out five. One of those hits was two run skyscraper hit by Gaby Martinez that tied the game at two in the sixth inning.
Biscuits hitters ended the night stranding ten runners on base, including a bases loaded opportunity in the bottom of the ninth. Nelson Payano and Luis Valdez chipped in with three scoreless frames to end the game, but the same was not the case for the Biscuit relief corps.
After a perfect eighth inning of work for Biscuits reliever Ryan Reid, Ka'aihue homered to start the ninth and touched up Reid for his first run in the Southern League. After retiring Javier Guzman, Reid struck out Ray Serrano, but when catcher John Jaso dropped the ball, his throw down to first was muffed by first baseman Gaby Martinez and Serrano reached base safely. After two walks and three stolen bases, Reid Gorecki and Greg Creek busted the game open with back-to-back two run singles that put the Braves definitively on top 7-2.
Reid was saddled with a five spot, but only charged with one earned run. He gave up two hits while walking two and striking out two.
The Biscuits will try to get back to even in game two of the second half on Wednesday night when the Biscuits and Braves play game two of a six game set at Riverwalk Stadium. Right hand starters Tommy Hanson and Wade Davis are scheduled to face off at 7:05 Central Time.
