Biscuits end first half with road loss, 2-1
Second half begins Tuesday at Riverwalk Stadium

MOBILE - The Mobile BayBears (29-41) topped the Montgomery Biscuits (34-36) in the final game of the first half on Sunday evening on Father's Day at Hank Aaron Stadium.

The Biscuits were hoping to climb to the .500 mark on Sunday, but were thwarted by newest BayBear Javier Brito. In his first appearance with Mobile this season, the former Southern League batting champion belted a two out, two run single in the eighth inning propelling Mobile to victory.

Both teams got solid starting pitching performances from spot starters. For the Biscuits, Jino Gonzalez made his second start of the season for the injured Richard De Los Santos. Gonzalez gave Montgomery an excellent outing, hurling five scoreless frames, while giving up three hits, two walks and striking out four. Reliever Brian Henderson bridged the gap to the eighth inning, tossing two more scoreless frames.

Roger Deago followed for the Biscuits and after recording the first out in the eighth, he allowed Yunesky Sanchez and Chris Rahl to reach base before retiring Gerardo Parra. On the next pitch, Brito came up with a huge two out RBI single, plating both Sanchez and Rahl to give Mobile a 2-0 lead.

The Biscuits were held scoreless until the top of the ninth. After leaving the bases loaded in the fourth it would take the butter and blue until the eighth inning for another solid scoring opportunity. It took until the ninth to break up the shutout.

Cody Evans made his second start for the BayBears and pitched well over four innings. Evans allowed no runs on three hits while striking out one and walking three. Relievers Abe Woody and Jose Marte combined for four more scoreless frames. BayBears closer Reid Mahon, perfect in save attempts this season, came on in the ninth to shut the door.

Montgomery posted their only run of the game against Mahon. Pat Cottrell reached on a error and eventually came around to score on a Mahon wild pitch. The inning continued and the Biscuits narrowly missed handing Mahon his first loss of 2008. Gaby Martinez came to the plate with runners on the corners and two outs, but bounced into a game ending ground out, giving the BayBears the 2-1 victory.

With the first half officially in the books, the Biscuits take a 34-36 record into the off day before returning home to Riverwalk Stadium to take on the Mississippi Braves in a six game set. Jake McGee faces off against James Parr at 7:05 Tuesday night in Alabama's capital.
