Montgomery knocks out 12 hits in win
|
MONTGOMERY – The Montgomery Biscuits (34-35) scored nine runs and gave away six at Hank Aaron Stadium Saturday night with 12 hits and three big errors in a 9-7 win over the Mobile BayBears (28-41).
The Biscuits led 7-0 for starter James Houser (2-1) but nearly cost him his second win of the season in a five-run Mobile sixth inning. In that frame, Houser snapped a string of seven straight BayBears retired with a throwing error. several hitters later, Chris Nowak's two-out throwing error cleared the bases. It happened just after Houser's departure. The lefty tossed 5 2/3 innings, allowing five runs (one earned) and striking out a season-high seven.
The Biscuits jumped on Mobile starter Hector Ambriz early. RBI hits by Chris Nowak and Sergio Pedroza, a sacrifice fly by Chris Nowak and a dropped flyball by Mobile's Gerardo Parra led to a four-run first inning.
It was a poor evening in the field for Parra, who made two more errors in a two-run seventh.
The Biscuits knocked out Ambriz after the fifth inning, in which Gaby Martinez drilled a two-run homer to right-center. Pedroza plated another run with a single.
Errors plagued the Biscuits again in the seventh inning, when a throwing error by former BayBear Ronnie Merrill led to two unearned runs for the Biscuits' bullpen. Merrill had been outstanding most of the game, making several difficult plays.
Ryan Reid threw a scoreless ninth inning to earn his second save.
The second half of the Southern League season begins Tuesday and the first half comes to a close Sunday. The Biscuits can finish the first half at .500 with a win on Sunday. The game begins at 6:05 p.m. with Montgomery lefty Jino Gonzalez on the hill.
