MONTGOMERY – The Montgomery Biscuits (33-35) defeated the Mobile BayBears (28-40) in a pitchers dual that lasted 13 innings and three hours and 45 minutes on the night of Friday the 13th at Riverwalk Stadium.
Biscuits starter Wade Davis set the tone for Montgomery, tossing seven scoreless frames, scattering four hits and striking out four. Montgomery would use four relievers to finish out the six remaining innings. The combination of Roger Deago, Jason Cromer, Brian Henderson and the eventual winner, Kevin Lynn was fantastic for the Biscuits. The bullpen did not allow a run in their six innings of work, leading the Biscuits to their first shutout win of the 2008 season.
There were other firsts in the game as well. Kevin Lynn notched his first victory and the Biscuits did something that had never been done before in their four year history. Montgomery played a scoreless nine inning game that went into extra innings. The 13 inning affair is also the longest of the season and ties a Biscuits all time record.
BayBears starter Tony Barnette matched Davis in the early goingfor Mobile. Barnette pitched a solid six innings of five hit ball, allowing no runs while walking three and striking out five. Jose Marte and Vince Bongiovanni combined for four scoreless frames followed by two more scoreless from BayBears third and final reliever Abe Woody.
Woody would eventually take the loss in the bottom of the 13th inning, despite not allowing an earned run.
Rashad Eldridge walked to start the frame and then advanced to third base on a bunt single from Ronnie Merrill, which was followed by a Woody throwing error on the same play. Gaby Martinez was given the intentional pass to load the bases with no one out for Chris Nowak.
Nowak who had already grounded into his league leading 15th double play in the sixth inning, bounced a ball to Cesar Nicolas that should have set up a 5-2-3 double play. With Eldridge sprinting for home, Nicolas' throw was on target, but catcher John Hester dropped the ball allowing Eldridge to score in walk-off fashion. It was the fifth walk-off celebration for the Biscuits this season.
Rusty Ryal highlighted the BayBears attack with a 3-for-6 performance and a stolen base. 25 men were left on base by both clubs, 12 for the Biscuits and an unlucky 13 for the BayBears.
The battle between Mobile and Montgomery will continue over the weekend down south, where the teams will meet two more times to finish out the first half. James Houser will take the ball in game one for the Biscuits and will oppose Hector Ambriz for the BayBears. The Biscuits looking to finish the first half at .500 will need a road mini-series sweep to get to 35-35. First pitch Saturday night is scheduled for 7:05.
