Biscuits hold off Barons, win 6-2
Birmingham waits to celebrate for at least one more day
|
HOOVER- Powered by the combination of starter James Houser and clean up man Chris Nowak, the Montgomery Biscuits (31-33) held the Birmingham Barons' (37-27) magic number at one, in a 6-2 victory at Regions Park Sunday afternoon.
In Houser's first start since activation from the disabled list he collected his first win this season. The victory was a long time coming for Houser, who held the fourth best ERA in the Southern League coming into Sunday's ballgame. The lanky left hander finished his afternoon after five and 1/3 innings pitched, allowing no runs on two hits, while striking out five and walking four.
Barons starter Ryan O'Malley held the Biscuits scoreless through five innings, but with two on and only one out, Chris Nowak tore the cover off the ball, bashing a three run homer to left centerfield to give Montgomery a three run lead.
After Ronnie Merril's sacrifice fly brought home another run in the seventh, the Barons would come back to narrow the gap in the eighth against southpaw reliever Roger Deago. Deago was stuck with two runs in one and 2/3 innings, after allowing the first two Barons to reach base and eventually score in the frame.
With a two run lead going into the top of the ninth inning, Chris Nowak answered the Birmingham attack, plating two more Biscuits on a two run RBI single. Nowak would give the Biscuits a four run cushion with his fourth and fifth RBIs of the game. The five men knocked in, ties a career high for Nowak that he set back in Visalia (Advanced A) in 2006.
Colter Bean picked up his third save for Montgomery. The Alabama native struck out four and walked one, giving up two hits in two innings of work.
The Biscuits go for their second straight series win Monday night in Hoover, when Jino Gonzalez makes his first start of the year in place of a sore Richard De Los Santos. On the otherside, Carlos Torres will attempt to drop the Barons' magic number to zero and insure sole possesion of the first half South Division title for Birmingham. Action in the game five rubber match gets underway at 7:05 Central Time.
