Barons drill Biscuits 12-4
Birmingham clinches at least share of SL South first half title

HOOVER– The Birmingham Barons (37-26) clinched at least a share of the Southern League South Division first half title Saturday night with a victory over the Montgomery Biscuits (30-33), 12-4.

Montgomery was able to hold off the Barons onFriday, but the Birmingham offense was too much for the Biscuits and starter Wade Davis on this night. Davis threw his shortest outing of the season, lasting just two innings while giving up six earned runs on seven hits. The Barons would continue to pour on the attack, plating six more against the Biscuits bullpen.

Southern League walks leader David Cook smashed a two run blast in the second inning to make the score 6-1 after the Barons started the game by batting around and bringing home four in the first. Ricardo Nanita supplied more than his fair share of the offense, driving in three runs, scoring two and launching a solo homer of his own in the third. All in all, the Barons stroked 12 hits for 12 runs and thrashed the Biscuits in game three of the five game set.

The Biscuits got some much needed offense from catcher John Jaso. Jaso knocked in three RBIs and went 2-for-4 after an 11 game stretch where he drove in just one run. Jaso and the Biscuits would put up four runs on Barons starter Justin Cassell, but the right hander's five innings of work would be enough to get to the Birmingham relief. The combination of Derek Rodriguez and Joseph Torres was lights out, allowing no hits and one walk through four scoreless frames, while striking out four.

The Barons make an attempt to finish off the Biscuits in the first half race in an afternoon affair on Sunday at 2:05. With Birmingham's magic number at one, a win from starter Ryan O'Malley is all they need to prevent a first half tie. James Houser returns from the disabled list to make the start for the Biscuits. Houser will try to get his first win in 2008 despite a 2.33 ERA, good enough for fourth in the Southern League.
