Biscuits pound Mudcats,11-4
Losing streak ends at five
|
MONTGOMERY – The Montgomery Biscuits (27-31) bounced back from five consecutive losses on Monday night when the recently struggling offense lit up Carolina Mudcats (32-26) pitching for 11 hits in an 11-4 win.
Just about everyone in the Biscuits lineup was in on the action, especially the heart of the order, the 4-5-6 hitters. Chris Nowak, John Jaso and Gaby Martinez were a combined 4-for-7 with seven runs scored, two RBIs and four walks. All three came around to score when Sergio Pedroza broke the game open in the fifth inning, stroking a bases-clearing double off the wall in deep right field. Pedroza's knock would make the score 7-2 and the Biscuits cruised to victory, eventually plating four more in the seventh.
Wade Davis took the hill for the Biscuits to start the game and picked up his team leading sixth victory. Davis lasted six innings, allowing just two runs on nine hits. Davis completed his seventh quality start in 12 chances despite struggling early. The right hander gave up seven of the nine hits through the first two innings alone, but managed to settle down and control the game in the middle innings. Both runs scored against Davis came in the first inning with RBIs from Chris Coghlan and Andrew Jenkins.
New arrival from Vero Beach Ryan Reid made his Biscuits debut following Davis' depature. Reid was a bit erratic tossing two wild pitches and walking two, but came away unscathed after two innings of work. He struck out two while tossing a scoreless seventh and eighth frame.
The story for the Mudcats continued to be Cameron Maybin. Maybin was a double shy of the cycle, going 3-for-5 with a prodigious two-run homer, two runs scored and two RBIs. However, the Carolina offense wasn't close to potent enough to protect starter Daniel Barone. Barone labored through four innings, allowing four runs on six hits and striking out four. The bullpen combination of Matt Yourkin and Jeff Gogal did not provide much relief as the two Mudcats gave up seven more runs (four earned) in the next three innings after Barone's departure.
Tuesday night the Biscuits try to make it two in a row and even the series against Carolina. Kevin Lynn will be making his second spot start of the year for the Biscuits. He's slated to pitch in place of the injured James Houser. Lynn will face off against Carolina starter Brett Sinkbeil. The ballgame will get underway at Riverwalk Stadium promptly at 7:05 Central Time in game four of the five game set.
