Mudcats outslug Biscuits, 7-6
Martinez's slam not enough

MONTGOMERY – The Montgomery Biscuits (26-30) lost their fourth straight game Saturday night, 7-6, in game one of a five game set against the Carolina Mudcats (31-25) at Riverwalk Stadium.

The Mudcats emerged victorious in a close contest after a sacrifice fly to center field in the top of the seventh inning from Cameron Maybin provided the winning run.  The run came against Biscuits reliever Roger Deago, who took the loss and hadn’t allowed an earned run since April 23, a streak spanning 12 outings and 16 innings.

There was no score through three innings, but in the top of the fourth inning, back to back RBI doubles from Chris Coghlan and Gaby Sanchez gave the Mudcats a 2-0 lead.  The Biscuits answered in the bottom half, when a grand slam from Gaby Martinez broke a streak of 15 scoreless innings and put Montgomery up 4-2.  The four run shot was a Biscuits record third of Gaby’s career.

The Mudcats struck twice more against Biscuits starter Mike Prochaska.  Kris Harvey blasted a two-run homer in the top of the fifth inning and back-to-back doubles to start off the sixth inning put the Mudcats on top 6-4.  Prochaska left the game after five-plus innings, giving up six runs on nine hits while striking out three and walking one.

The Biscuits retaliated when Chris Nowak launched a two-run bomb off the left-centerfield scoreboard to tie the game at six.  Nowak connected with a pitch from reliever Matt Yourkin who came in to replace Mudcats starter Rick Vanden Hurk after the Dutchman allowed four earned runs in five innings of work.  In Vanden Hurk’s first start since activation from the disabled list, he allowed five hits, struck out six and walked two.

After the Maybin sacrifice fly that gave Carolina the final lead, Mudcats closer Chris Mobley made things interesting in the ninth. Erold Andrus singled to start the inning and after a sacrifice bunt by Sergio Pedroza, Johnny Raburn singled to make it first and third with only one out.  Mobley regained his composure and struck out the final two Biscuits to come to the plate, icing a game one victory for Carolina.

Saturday’s game was played before a crowd of 7,319, the 10th largest in Riverwalk Stadium history and second largest of the 2008 season.

Sunday's matchup features Biscuits lefty Jake McGee, who will try to stop the bleeding against Carolina righthander Ryan Tucker.  The afternoon affair will get underway at 2:05 Central Time.  Kids run the bases after the game presented by Coca-Cola.
