Biscuits hang on for 4-2 win in Chattanooga opener
Montgomery wins fourth straight

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Montgomery Biscuits hit the halfway point in their eight-game roadtrip Monday night and remained perfect with a 4-2 series-opening win against the Chattanooga Lookouts at AT&T Field.

The Biscuits captured the lead and refused to relinquish it, though the Lookouts threatened.

The Biscuits led, 3-0, when Chattanooga ran off Montgomery starter Jake McGee (5-2) in the sixth inning. He had allowed a hit and a walk to lead off the inning. Reliever Jason Cromer allowed three successive singles to score the two inherited runners and load the bases with no outs. Yet from this position, McGee (5 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K) still won his team-leading fifth game.

Cromer rebounded to strike out Craig Tatum and induced a 1-2-3 double play from B.J. Szymanski to end the inning and hold the lead. The lefty pitched another scoreless inning, and Brian Henderson pitched in a scoreless eighth. Colter Bean allowed two hits in the ninth but notched his first save.

Bean is the seventh different Biscuit to earn a save this season. He is also the fourth different Biscuit to register a save in the last three days (Steve Andrade, Henderson and Roger Deago).

Matt Spring had another big game at the plate. His third-inning infield hit led to Montgomery's first run, as he scored on Johnny Raburn's sacrifice fly. He also hit a solo home run in the ninth against Chattanooga closer Josh Roenicke. In 16 games, Spring has 21 hits, including eight doubles and four home runs.

Montgomery also scored on a Rashad Eldridge single in the fifth and a solo homer by Chris Nowak in the sixth.

The Biscuits made a loser of Chattanooga righty Jordan Smith in his Double-A debut. Smith allowed three runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Though it remained five games behind the Birmingham Barons, Montgomery's win was the ninth in its last 11 games, beginning with the Biscuits' stunning 10-run comeback win over the Mississippi Braves on May 14. The Biscuits are one game shy of .500 for the first time since April 18. They have not been above .500 all season.
