McGee shines in 4-1 series-opening win
Biscuits' ace fans season-high nine
|
MONTGOMERY – Montgomery Biscuits ace Jake McGee (4-2) struck out a season-high nine in seven shutout innings at Riverwalk Stadium Wednesday night, helping the Biscuits (21-25) to a 4-1 series-opening victory over the Mobile BayBears.
McGee was dominating, fanning the side in order on 12 pitches in the second inning and allowing only three hits, with no baserunner making it past second base. His nine strikeouts tied a Double-A career high, which he established August 26, 2007 against the Carolina Mudcats.
The Biscuits got him some immediate support against Mobile starter Brooks Brown, scoring three runs in the first inning. The eventual game-winner scored on a groundout by Chris Nowak and two more scored on a two-out single by Gaby Martinez. Martinez doubled in the fourth inning and scored Montgomery's fourth run on a single by Sergio Pedroza.
Roger Deago ran his streak to 10 appearances without an earned run by pitching a perfect eighth. Steve Andrade could not seal up the shutout, however, as the BayBears rapped two hits against him and scored on a Brian Byrne groundout.
The Biscuits have now gone 64 consecutive games, including postseason games, without notching a team shutout, dating back to McGee's August 26, 2007 game, in which the Biscuits defeated Carolina 4-0.
With the win, the Biscuits climbed into a tie for second place in the South Division. It's the first time they've been higher than third place since April 7. They also climbed to within four games of .500, the first time they've done that since they were 7-11 on April 21.
Montgomery and Mobile play one more in Montgomery, a 7:05 game on Thursday night with Wade Davis (4-2) against Tony Barnette (2-5), before finishing their tangle with Mobile with three games at Hank Aaron Stadium.
