Biscuits' 9-run 5th powers 11-5 win over Smokies
Montgomery's big inning ties an all-time best

MONTGOMERY – Rashad Eldridge and Ronnie Merrill grounded out to begin the Montgomery Biscuits' (20-25) fifth inning at Riverwalk Stadium Monday night. But before the inning was over, all nine in the Biscuits' order had scored, and the Biscuits were well on their way to an 11-5, series-ending victory over the visiting Tennessee Smokies (16-29).

The offense supported a quality start by Mike Prochaska in his return to Montgomery and bolstered the Biscuits, winners of five of their last six.

Rhyne Hughes's double was the first step in a long journey in the fifth. Eight other Biscuits followed by reaching base, including a three-run double by Gaby Martinez. Merrill capped the inning with a prodigious two-run homer to right field. Five runs came against Tennessee starter Mitch Atkins (4.2 IP, 8 H, 6 ER) and four scored against reliever Matt Avery (1.1 IP, 5 H, 5 ER).

Martinez hit a solo homer against Avery in the seventh inning to round out Montgomery's scoring.

Prochaska pitched scoreless baseball until Smokies second baseman Joe Simokaitis led off the sixth with a home run. Tennessee got him for two more runs in the seventh, knocking him out in that inning.

Simokaitis took to the mound in the eighth, throwing a scoreless inning. It was the third pitching appearance of his career and the second against the Biscuits this season.

The Smokies scored two meaningless runs in the ninth against reliever Kevin Lynn on a Jake Fox double and a Matt Matulia single.

The Biscuits won the series, four to one, and lead the season series, eight to two.

Montgomery takes Tuesday off before welcoming the Mobile BayBears to town on Wednesday.
