Mississippi edges Biscuits, 5-4
Braves even series with comeback win
|
PEARL, Miss. – Jason Perry's windswept home run in the seventh inning at Trustmark Park Sunday afternoon overturned a lead by the Montgomery Biscuits and led his Mississippi Braves to a series-evening 5-4 win.
Perry's home run, against reliever Jason Cromer, costing him the loss, a day after he notched the win and led the Biscuits to a win in a battle of bullpens.
This time it was Mississippi's Michael Nix and Luis Valdez who won the bullpen struggle. Nix benefitted from the Perry home run and got the win, but he might otherwise have lost after a seventh-inning single by Rashad Eldridge scored Matt Spring and gave Montgomery a 4-3 lead.
Each starter -- Montgomery's Wade Davis and Mississippi's James Parr -- allowed three runs in six innings.
Parr's runs all came on homers. Biscuits catcher Matt Spring, who had a three-hit day, clubbed a two-run homer in the third inning and Mississippi native Rhyne Hughes hit a solo homer in the fourth.
The Braves' three runs scored in a four-hit third inning. Davis allowed only six hits during the start, while walking two, hitting two and striking out six.
Jeremy Flanagan, in his return to the Biscuits, threw a perfect eighth inning.
The Biscuits and Braves play the middle game of the series at 7:05 p.m. on Monday.
