Biscuits Rally Late to Best BayBears
5-run 8th keys come-from-behind 9-6 win
MONTGOMERY, AL – The Biscuits (47-38) scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, and the bullpen bailed out Alex Torres with 7.2 of one-run baseball, beating the Mobile BayBears (45-40) by a final of 9-6 Thursday at Riverwalk.
Leslie Anderson started the eighth with a single. After Cody Cipriano walked, Matt Sweeney singled to score Anderson and tie the game at 5-5. Cipriano came home on a wild pitch to take the lead, and a Drew Anderson sac-fly and a Rashad Eldridge two-run single added the insurance.
After each team scored twice in the first inning, the BayBears took a commanding lead with three in the second thanks to a two-run single for Collin Cowgill and a wild pitch from Torres. Torres was pulled from the game with one out in the second, allowing five runs on four hits and four walks without recording a strikeout.
While Heath Rollins and Sergio Espinosa kept the game close with scoreless relief, the offense began to chip away. Henry Wrigley started the sixth with a homer, and a Taylor Harbin throwing error cut it to 5-4 through six innings.
Wrigley went 2-5 and Leslie Anderson went 2-4 to pace the Biscuits.
Paul Phillips (3-2) picked up the victory, allowing a run over two innings while striking out three. Reid Mahon (2-3) allowed three runs in the eighth to succumb the lead and was tagged with the loss.
LHP David Newmann will toss for the Biscuits on Friday against the BayBears’ LHP Wade Miley, beginning at 7:05.
