Espinosa, Biscuits Lose in 11
Barons sweep Biscuits with 3-2 win
MONTGOMERY, AL – The Biscuits (45-38) went the final five innings without a hit, and Sergio Espinosa gave up the losing run for the second night in a row as the Biscuits fell 3-2 in 11 innings to the Birmingham Barons (31-54), completing a three-game sweep Tuesday at Riverwalk.
Espinosa (0-2) retired the first batter of the eleventh, but after two singles and a fielder’s choice bouncer put runners at the corners with two outs, Justin Greene singled up the middle to score Jason Bour for what would prove to be the decisive run.
The Biscuits were not without their chances. They drew leadoff walks in each of the last three innings, and left runners in scoring position three of the last four. In the eleventh, Cody Cipriano walked then moved to second on a John Matulia sacrifice bunt. But Shawn O’Malley and Emeel Salem both bounced out to second to kill the chance.
The Biscuits didn’t trail until Greene’s go-ahead single. Leslie Anderson put the Biscuits on the board first in the third with a two-out single to score Rashad Eldridge, and after the Barons tied it at 1-1 with a sixth-inning sacrifice fly, Matt Sweeney recorded a sac fly of his own to put Montgomery back in front at 2-1 after six. The game was forced into extras by a Greene bases loaded fielder’s choice groundout in the seventh.
Overshadowed by the late loss was another stellar pitching performance for Jake McGee, who struck out eight over 6.0 innings. Birmingham starter Brandon Hynick also took a no-decision, allowing two runs over six innings. The win went to Deunte Heath (2-2), who pitched a pair of scoreless relief innings. Anthony Carter garnered his 11th save.
Leslie Anderson reached all five times, going 3-3 with two doubles and two walks.
The Biscuits begin a four-game set with the Mobile BayBears on Wednesday night as RHP Alex Cobb throws against LHP Pat McAnaney.
