Defense Falters Early in Defeat
Carolina grabs 3-0 lead early, Biscuits manage just six hits
MONTGOMERY, AL – Sloppy defense put the Biscuits (54-44) in an early hole, and they’d manage only six hits on the night, falling 5-1 to the Carolina Mudcats (46-53) on Sunday night at Riverwalk.
Felix Perez doubled off of Alex Cobb (4-4) on the first pitch of the night, and Luis Terrero singled with one out to put runners at the corners. Alex Cobb then got Mike Costanzo to chop to second. Shawn O’Malley fielded cleanly and tossed to second for one, but Chris De La Cruz dropped the ball on the transfer and Perez scored to make it 1-0. Dave Sappelt followed with a walk, then Henry Wrigley committed a throwing error to allow the second run to score.
The Mudcats added one in the third on a Sappelt single. The Biscuits managed to cut it to 3-1 on a Leslie Anderson single in the sixth, but they would leave the bases loaded in the inning and get no closer.
Ryan Reid relieved Cobb and succumbed two runs in the seventh to bring the game to its final margin.
Only one run against Cobb was earned. He struck out a season-high eight over six innings, walking two and giving up seven hits. Carolina starter Scott Carroll (3-5) allowed a run on just four hits in his six innings to get the win.
Wrigley led the Biscuits, going 2-4 with a pair of singles.
RHP Heath Rollins will start in place of David Newmann in the series finale on Monday against Carolina’s LHP Tom Cochran at 7:05.
