Biscuits Drop Marathon
BayBears score 5 in the 13th to win 4-hour, 11-minute game

MONTGOMERY, AL - A four-hour, eleven-minute, 13 inning marathon ended in a 9-4 Biscuits loss to the BayBears on Friday at Riverwalk Stadium. Mobile batted around on Biscuits reliever Justin Garcia in the 13th, driving in five runs.

The Biscuits got to BayBears starting pitcher Tom Layne in the first. Shawn O’Malley led things off with an infield single, then moved to second when Emeel Salem followed with a walk. After Greg Sexton reached on a fielder’s choice, Matt Fields knocked O’Malley with a single.

The BayBears took their first lead the following inning. The first three reached against Biscuits starter Aneury Rodriguez, with Taylor Harbin driving home Konrad Schmidt with a single and Sean Coughlin scoring on a Jake Elmore sacrifice fly.

They’d score two more in the third when Evan Frey and Collin Cowgill scored on a two-out error to widen the BayBears lead to 4-1. Mobile would not score again until the 13th.

The Biscuits cut the deficit to 4-3 in the sixth on a Cody Cipriano single, driving home Greg Sexton and Cody Strait. In the eighth, Matt Fields hit the first Biscuits homer of the season to tie the game at 4-4 where it would remain until the fateful 13th.

The BayBears banged out 16 hits in the game, having four players finish with three a piece. Fields was the only Biscuit with multiple hits.

Garcia (0-1) allowed seven hits in the 13th, picking up the loss. Brian Henry (1-0) worked three innings of scoreless relief for the BayBears, earning the win.

Before Garcia, the Biscuits bullpen was splendid. After Rodriguez left after four, Darin Downs went four innings, striking out five and allowing just one hit. Eddie Morlan was just as good, striking out two in two scoreless innings of relief work.

Rodriguez allowed four earned runs on six hits in his four innings. Layne went 5.1, allowing three runs, one earned.

LHP Jake McGee takes the ball for the Biscuits on Saturday against RHP Matt Torra for the BayBears with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05.
