Former Biscuit Jeremy Hellickson Honored as 2011 Rookie of the Year

Hellickson second Biscuit to receive honor

MONTGOMERY, AL – Tampa Bay Rays rookie starter Jeremy Hellickson became only the second Tampa Bay Ray, and second former Biscuit to take home the American League Rookie of the Year Award today.  Hellickson finished his rookie campaign with a 13-10 record, 2.95 ERA, and tabulated 189 IP.  He led all major league rookies in ERA, innings, starts, and opponents’ batting average.  Hellickson also strung together a magnificent run in September, notching five consecutive wins against steep AL East competition.  His best month came in May when he accumulated a 4-1 record and 1.36 ERA.  Hellickson was only the 10th pitcher to win the award, and second in the last 30 elections.

Hellickson pitched for the Biscuits in 2008 and 2009, after being drafted in the 4th round of the 2005 MLB amateur draft.  He was 7-5 in Montgomery overall with a 3.16 ERA notching 141 strikeouts in only 131.3 IP.  He’ll add this honor to Baseball America’s 2010 Minor League Player of the Year, International League Most Valuable Pitcher, and 2010 USA Today Minor League Player of the Year.

Mark Trumbo of the Anaheim Angels finished 2nd in voting, and Eric Hosmer of the Kansas City Royals finished 3rd.  Craig Kimbrel of the Atlanta Braves took home National League Rookie of the Year honors.
