MOBILE, AL - Left-hander Matt Moore became the first Biscuit in team history to throw a no-hitter, striking out 11 and allowing just two base-runners all night in an 8-0 win over the Mobile BayBears Thursday night at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile.
Moore fielded a bouncer back to the mound from A.J. Pollock and fired to first for the game's final out after striking out Dan Kaczrowski and Jake Elmore to start the inning. The key defensive play of the night came with two outs in the eighth when second-baseman Shawn O'Malley bare-handed and threw in one motion on a slow bouncing ball off the bat of Alfredo Marte. The throw was in the dirt but dug out by first-baseman Henry Wrigley.
It was the first nine-inning no-hitter in the Southern League since Tommy Hanson of the Mississippi Braves no-hit the BayBears at Trustmark Park on June 25th of 2008. It was the first no-hitter in Hank Aaron Stadium history.
Nevin Ashley caught Moore, who threw 106 pitches total, a staggering 76 for strikes. The only two base-runners of the game came off walks - Marc Krauss in the second and Elmore in the sixth.
Not only was it the first no-hitter of Moore's career, it was his first complete-game.
Stephen Vogt led the offensive effort going 3-5 and knocking in three. Daniel Mayora cranked his third home run of the week.
The Biscuits have matched a season-best five-game win-streak, and have won nine of their last ten.
RHP Chris Archer will throw for the Biscuits Friday against Mobile RHP Wes Roemer, beginning at 7:05.
