Biscuits Take Series in Thrilling Extra-Inning Win
The Biscuits won 3-2 in ten innings to win their eighth rubber match of the year
JACKSON, Tenn.- With the tying run on third and the winning run on first in the tenth inning, Kirby Yates (12) induced a ground ball to end the game in a 3-2 Biscuits (57-46/21-14) win over the Jackson Generals (61-43/19-15) in the series rubber-match Saturday night at Pringles Park.
After Yates struck out Stefen Romero and Mayo Acosta threw out Brad Miller trying to steal second, the bases were empty with two outs in the tenth inning, Biscuits leading 3-2. Denny Almonte drew a walk and Rich Poythress singled to put runners on the corners. Chih-Hsien Chiang hit a hard groundball to first that Michael Sheridan gloved and stepped on the bag to end the game.
In the top of the tenth inning, the Generals intentionally walked Omar Luna to load the bases with one out for Mikie Mahtook. The former first-round pick out of LSU hit a deep fly ball to right field that scored Shawn O'Malley from third and broke a 2-2 tie.
Merrill Kelly (6-1) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the win. Montgomery got a strong start from Nick Barnese. The right-hander gave up one run on four hits through five innings in a no-decision.
Ty Morrison finished the game 3-for-4 while Lee, Mahtook and O'Malley all finished with two hits.
The Biscuits will head back to Riverwalk Stadium to start a five-game series with the Mississippi Braves on Sunday. RHP Alex Colome will start for Montgomery while Mississippi will send LHP Brent Leach to the mound. First pitch is slated for 6:05.
